Why Film

Film photography and videography is personal, classic, and full of personality. Analog formats require attention, skill, and patience that forces us to stay present; like we want to be on our wedding days.

Film also encourages play; double exposures, a variety of film stocks and formats, and the magic of your friends and family trying out manual film cameras to photograph their perspective of your day come together to give you a unique keepsake from your wedding.

There aren’t many photographers that offer complete film coverage of weddings these days. With film photography, a person touches every frame by hand. Whether I or a trusted lab develop and scan your images, they will be processed, dried, scanned, and archived with care.

This process takes longer than uploading and editing a gallery of digital images. It is also more expensive, as the film stocks and the development chemicals, or development and scanning services if outsourced, have their own costs. You will receive fewer images in your wedding gallery with film-coverage than you would digital, but these photos will also be more intentional and carry more soul than most digital files can.

Diversity on film

Like modern electronic camera systems, film has a racist history that is important to acknowledge. Film stocks were not traditionally made for dark skin tones, and photographing light-skinned and dark-skinned people together often left someone under or overexposed.

If the last time you were photographed on film was decades ago and you weren’t impressed with the way your skin photographed, the experience will be different this time. Modern film stocks are much better at capturing a wider range of skin tones, and with a well-positioned flash and film-development techniques, we can compensate for different values even in challenging light situations.

You can view the Fullest Table gallery here to see what different skin tones captured in a dark (challenging) light setting will look like on film.

Accessibility

We’re all different, so why would we expect everyone’s access needs to be the same?

Jess Beaudin Media is a queer and values-led business. I am committed to making my business as accessible as possible by:

  • Masking to promote public health and protect immunocompromised individuals (I often photographed back-to-back events and do not want to get your grandma sick.).
  • Offering sliding-scale prices on a case-by-case basis.
  • Practicing a trauma-informed approach. In short, I avoid using colonially-violent photographic terms; I interact with everyone from the understanding that we all carry trauma and actively try to create a compassionate and understanding space where it is safe to be you, whatever you looks like today.
  • Consent: I won’t touch you without asking; all photographs will made in collaboration with each other: you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to (and I will check-in often to make sure we’re all feeling good); and I will get consent before sharing your images and names online.
  • Light and sound sensitivities: I am able to use continuous lighting instead of flashes, and help create a quiet space to help keep your nervous-system calm.

If I don’t address your access specific needs in this list, please let me know how I can better serve you!
