The effects of fast-fashion are felt on the environment, labour rights, the economy, and artist and designer’s intellectual rights.
While many individuals are waking up to the realities of our environmental crisis, consumers are still disconnected from the impacts their fashion purchases have on these domains. This gap is widened by the economic barriers of access to sustainable and ethically made designs, which in turn create a cycle of purchasing fast-fashion items and discarding or donating them; which amplifies the industry’s effects on our environment and society.
This shoot features three sustainable designers based in B.C. Their designs have been photographed in a hybrid natural and man-made environment, the Queen Elizabeth Park and Bloedel Conservatory. The curated gardens and man-made conservatory offer juxtaposition to the “natural” flora of the park to remind viewers of the marks we all leave as consumers, even when our purchases are mindful of sustainability.
